WiMSA creates an empowering network to inspire, support and develop the progression of women working in the South African mining industry.

About Us

WiMSA provides a free platform that supports and guides the personal growth, leadership and career development of women in the South African mining industry. We were established in 2010 as a non-profit organisation and exist through sponsorship and time given by volunteers.

We organise professional events that allow our 2,000+ members to build networks

We continually establish partnerships with industry and government

We facilitate both regional and international inter-company mentorships

We present at local and international mining events and workshops

We contribute and write articles for industry publications

We participate in school career fairs facilitated by companies

Thabile is the Group Executive: Mining Engineering at Impala Platinum. In recognition of her vision, leadership, and achievements, Thabile has presented on various platforms on topics of women empowerment in business, and the need for businesses to harness the potential of women in South Africa.

Deputy Chairperson

Petro has experienced the mining industry from various perspectives and is currently in-house management consultant for Anglo American. Petro's specialties include operating model implementation, change management and business improvement. Her desire is to create a platform where women's voices are heard within the mining industry, and to make mining companies aware of the importance of gender diversification as the key to achieving sustainable success in the industry.

She serves as the chairperson of the Sasol Women in Mining Forum and the Women in Mining Task Team (which promotes the health, safety and security of women in the mining industry). Portia holds a BTech Mining Engineering from the University of Johannesburg and holds a Mine Managers Certificate of Competency in Coal.
